It was a great honor and privilege to participate in bringing this working scale model of the Curiosity Rover to life. Originally created as a proof-of-concept prototype for an interactive display at the Kennedy Space Center. We started
by looking at pictures of the Curiosity Rover that NASA had for public usage and picked out details that we wanted to capture as we didn't have a physical item to look at and take measurements. Our most ambitious design project to date. This entire project was 'eyeballed' mathematically and scientifically. This scale model needed to be as realistic as possible to the actual rover.
We designed the entire Rover in Autodesk Fusion 360.
Flat stair treads arrived at our facility. The treads were then bent into shape using our 8ft, 112-ton press brake. Tread carriers were cut from angle iron and holes were drilled for future installation. Finally, the carriers were welded to the stair tread using MIG welding. We stacked and banded them for shipping to their next destination. Our production was for 400 treads with many more to come.
